Description

Smooth sumac is a lush, green, attractive plant that has a wide range of uses

If you want to create an inviting garden, grow your favorite flowers and watch them thrive with these beautiful bushes. They're also a perfect size for lining the way to your front door or along a walkway. It is an underused, pioneering species that often takes on the very qualities gardeners seek—such as a dense and spreading form, leaves with a feathery leaf stem, and foliage of many different shades of green.

This plant typically bears orange and red berries. The smooth sumac is an opportunistic species and may be found in a variety of habitats, including woodland margins, on creek banks, and near farm buildings.
Found in the Eastern United States, it is a small tree with a wide distribution. The leaves are feather-compound with 15 to 23 leaflets. The stem is smooth without wings, and the leaflets are pointed at the tips and rounded at their bases.

Smooth sumac is a great addition to any garden, providing many benefits, which include its beauty, hardiness, and benefits to the soil. It flourishes in warm weather and is an excellent source of vitamin C. The edible leaves have a tangy flavor and provide important nutrients. It is best consumed by grinding the leaves and sprinkling them on bread or other dishes. The plant is often found in disturbed areas around homesites and farms and can be propagated by seed or root cuttings. It is a versatile plant that can be used for eating, medicine, and juice. This juicy, nutritional fruit and a souring agent is a great addition to your dishes. It can be made into pies, jams, and sauces in a matter of minutes! This plant is an under-appreciated native shrub that produces an edible berry.
